On the figure of Jesus in Israeli literature

  • Sarah Kaminski

Abstract

In Jewish literatures the poetic of interpretation is considered as an important narrative approach. From Midrash to modern Jewish and also Israeli narrative this poetic conveys the capacity to embrace and reject, sublimate or depreciate mythology, symbols and historical protagonists. Since two thousand years the figure of Jesus accompanies Hebrew literature. The Talmud repudiates it expressing a durable concern about the integrity of the Jewish community after the destruction of the Second Temple of Jerusalem.  The Illuminist movement rediscovers Jesus the Jew and so did a part of the Zionist narrators coming from East Europe replanting the discussed protagonist in the virgin land of Israel. Jesu is a model for the universal man of Mark Chagall, A.A. Kabak leads him through the beautiful geography of Galilee and the contemporary generation. Last but not least, Amos Oz analyses existential questions as love and betray through the figure of Jesus the Jew.
