A note on the Pro Roscio Amerino

  • T. A. Dorey

Abstract

The author notes that, among the motivations that led Cicero to write the Pro Roscio Amerino, in addition to those of a strictly private nature, one must probably include political implications. In fact, this defence constituted an indirect attack on Crassus, who had enriched himself thanks to the Sillan proscriptions, which had mainly affected the Optimates and were therefore particularly opposed by the Metelli. Among the various consequences of the victory of the defence, as far as Cicero was concerned, were the hatred of Crassus, which continued over the years, and in parallel the subsequent support of the Metelli for the orator's cursus honorum; this political collaboration would continue over time.
