Abstract

This paper shows the socio-cultural factors and challenges that may confront the translator throughout his work and how the negligence of such factors affects the translated version. To bring about this, we chose as corpus the Trilogy of Nobel Prize writer Naguib Mahfouz and its translation made by Philippe Vigreux and published by the French publishing house Jean-Claude Lattès in order to study how the translator dealt with these factors specially the religious expressions and their structures frequently used by the original writer. The main objective of this study is to find out whether the translator succeeded in transmitting the meaning and the desired values of the original text especially for the religious expressions used by Mahfouz or as a writer-translator, he made an original text himself. Our method will be to choose different religious expressions used by the novelist, classify them, and look for their stylistic and esthetic effects. Then, we will analyze the processes approached by the translator to transmit them in the target language.
