Mignon risorge nella musica

Abstract

Tra i numerosi personaggi del Wilhelm Meister, Mignon è uno dei più squisitamente goethiani per la sua natura misteriosa e inafferrabile. La morte della giovane artista nei Wilhelm Meisters Wanderjahre determina un punto di frattura nel racconto: dopo questo episodio il romanzo diventa un’opera eminentemente pedagogica e così anche i personaggi più simpatici al lettore diventano tanto noiosi quanto edificanti. Goethe risparmia Mignon da questa trasformazione preservando la sua identità indecifrabile, leggera a tal punto da valicare i limiti del romanzo e insinuarsi nelle ballate e nei Lieder romantici. Da quest’ottica il funerale di Mignon dentro il romanzo si trasforma in una spinta verso nuove metamorfosi oltre l’originario universo fittizio.

Mignon Revives into Music
Because of her mysterious and elusive nature, Mignon is one of the most charmingly Goethian characters among the many ones of the novel Wilhelm Meister. The young artist’s death in Wilhelm Meisters Wanderjahre determines a break point in the story: from there on, the novel becomes an eminently pedagogic work and so even the nicest characters become as boring as uplifting. Goethe spares Mignon from this transformation preserving her indecipherable identity, so light to be capable of crossing the novel’s borders weaving its way through the ballad and the Romantic Lied. From this perspective, Mignon’s funeral inside the novel transforms itself into a thrust towards a new metamorphosis beyond the original imaginary universe.
