Abstract

Dancing Bodies and Fairytale Bodies in Soviet Musical Theatre by Sergej Prokof’ev
The article deals with the ballet Romeo and Juliet and with the music fable Peter and the Wolf, two famous works composed by Prokofiev in mid-1930s, after his return to Soviet Union at the end of a long stay in Europe and North America. The “new simplicity” in which the main characters of Prokofiev’s music theatre appear shows - in the cases of Juliet and Peter - a physical and gestural dimension tightly connected with the moral and psychological dimension of the new aesthetic of Socialist Realism. The article takes into account a number of examples of neo-tonality imbued with strong symbolic values and showing a limited use of dissonance and a sophisticated palette of harmonic and formal moves inherited from his pre-Soviet period. In these compositional strategies one can see the physical component of the piano-player / composer who used to compose all his music on the keyboard, then transferring the gestural expressiveness of the performance even into his orchestral and stage works. In Peter and the Wolf the main device for expression and performance lies in the features of the timbre of each individual instrument.
